History
Ahlström Capital was founded in 2001 when A. Ahlstrom Corporation was divided into three independent companies: Ahlström Capital, Ahlstrom Corporation, which is listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange, and A. Ahlström Osakeyhtiö.
Ahlström Capital was established to continue A. Ahlstrom Corporation’s successful industrial and investment business. Its start-up capital consisted of industrial shareholdings, real estate, forest land and liquid funds, which were transferred to the company in the demerger of A. Ahlstrom Corporation.
The founding of Ahlström Capital was preceded by 150 years of family entrepreneurship:
- Founded in 1851 by Antti Ahlström, the company comprised a sawmill, a small paper mill and some ironworks
- Since the 1890’s Ahlstrom has been one of the largest companies in Finland and formed part of the country’s industrial heritage
- In the 1960’s the company became a Finnish pioneer in international expansion
- In 2001 A. Ahlstrom Corporation was split in 3 companies:
- Ahlstrom Corporation, industrial company
- Ahlström Capital Oy, investment company
- A. Ahlström Osakeyhtiö, heritage company
